OUR VERSION OF BLACK FRIDAY

OUR VERSION OF BLACK FRIDAY

Posted by IPD International on

Black Friday.

The day following Thanksgiving in the United States, marks the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. The term "Black Friday" has evolved over time. In the early 20th century, the day was associated with heavy traffic and overcrowded stores, often leading to chaotic scenes. However, the modern meaning of "Black Friday" emerged in the 1960s in Philadelphia. Police officers coined the term to describe the congestion and disorder caused by large crowds of shoppers, particularly around the city's Thanksgiving Day parade.

By the 1980s, retailers rebranded "Black Friday" as a positive event. The term took on a more financial meaning when businesses explained that their balance sheets, traditionally in the "red" (indicating losses), would shift to "black" (indicating profits) due to the surge in holiday shopping. This shift marked a turning point in retail culture, with Black Friday becoming a massive commercial event.

Today, Black Friday is synonymous with deep discounts and doorbuster deals, both in-store and online. It's become a global phenomenon, with retailers across the world adopting the tradition. While it has faced criticism for promoting consumerism and contributing to worker exploitation, Black Friday remains one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

When it comes to black Friday sales, just about every brand in the world has participated at least once. Our very first year we closed our site completely, then the following years we offered some sort of deal. That’s the thing: everyone offers a deal, and some of the biggest brands can offer deals that just can’t be beaten. We don’t want to go 70% off. We want you guys to shop in stores and in the surf shops that have been along the way while we’ve built this brand since around 2020.

So this year, we teamed up with some surf shops to gather around Black Friday and Small Business Saturday to offer you a BOGO item when you buy anything IPD from these stores:
