Cyber Monday, a term coined by marketing experts, refers to the Monday following Thanksgiving in the United States and has become one of the biggest online shopping days of the year. The concept was first introduced in 2005 by the National Retail Federation (NRF) to describe the surge in online shopping that occurred on the Monday after Black Friday. The name "Cyber Monday" was intended to capitalize on the growing trend of consumers shopping online after returning to work from the Thanksgiving holiday.
The popularity of Cyber Monday grew rapidly as more people gained access to high-speed internet at home and in the workplace. Retailers began to offer exclusive online deals, further incentivizing shoppers to take advantage of discounts. As e-commerce expanded and technology improved, Cyber Monday evolved into a major event, rivaling Black Friday in terms of sales volume.
By the 2010s, Cyber Monday had become a global phenomenon, with retailers around the world offering discounts on a wide range of products. It now marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season, with sales extending throughout the week and beyond. While the term "Cyber Monday" initially referred to work-based online shopping, it has since become synonymous with widespread digital retail promotions across various platforms.
