REMIXING TWO IPD CLASSICS

REMIXING TWO IPD CLASSICS

Posted by IPD International on

At IPD, we love making video clips. Whether it’s surf, skate, lifestyle, product, or a mix of all these genres, it’s a digital MP4 world we live in. In the days prior, it was all about images. They adorned the sides of surf shops, covers of surf magazines, the ads inside those magazines and elsewhere, and even hanging in people's homes if they were lucky enough to have an epic ride of theirs captured. However, rapidly this notion changed from imagery to videos in recent memory.

Surf movies have been around forever, but the digital landscape helped make the clip reign supreme. Ads are ran online, the magazines are no more (except SURFER and Surfers Journal, two of our internal favorites), and the major applications like Instagram and Tik Tok have made it clear. Videos out perform images, capture peoples attention faster, and lead to more engagement. We heard that loud and clear. While we love images for seasonal imagery and a banger surf shot here and there, video reigns supreme.

Knowing this, we wanted to create some video franchises we could apply our roster to. Think Team Mixtapes, videos where we splice together a bunch of the team riders into one banger clip. Also think ATVs, where we focus on one ambassador that has surfing, skateboarding, and even snowboarding embedded in their daily DNA. Then we have a couple profile films or clips that focus on a soul athlete, run a little longer, and feature multiple sections.

Enter Passport and No Passport. Originally, Ty burgess came to us with an idea-a video clip edited by his buddy Joey AKA Morning Mixtapes. We loved the idea. Turns out, Ty didn’t realize that his passport was long expired. As you could have guessed it, the video turned into NO PASSPORT, a love letter to the local zones that groomed Ty’s surfing to where it is today. Cylinders, Five Four, Upper Trestles, and even some zones in between. We threw an awesome viewing party for the clip and it got people stoked to score in their local zones. If you haven’t seen it, it’s required viewing:

Turns out Ty ended up getting his passport situation dialed and decided the time was right for a banger surf trip. Surf trips to far away lands require quite a bit of thought and there is always the chance the waves don’t show up. But just like we echo - no risk no reward. Ty has scored the local zone time and time again. So it was time to hop on a long flight and hit the road.

After about a month across the world getting barreled off his head, Ty came back to one of our hotdog skate nights with clips a plenty to show. The dude was doing exactly what he does at home in Newport-finding the biggest widest barrels to get blown out of. It was decided then and there that the sequel to No Passport be simple and effective: Passport. A short about Ty’s big score at the right hander known as Nias.

It’s been a little while since Ty has been able to start working on a new clip. Injuries, life, and a current flat spell that September in Newport has never seen. The marketing crew decided they wanted to create a fun mashup of Ty’s two films. There are some insane waves at both Cylinders and Nias, as well as rail game and punts that would be great set to a loud, abrasive soundtrack.

We hacked up both sections, used the best bit of Joey’s editing, set a new soundtrack, draped the whole clip in black and white, and decided to post it on our youtube. HOME & AWAY is exactly what it sounds like. Waves at home, waves away from home. Tap into the latest IPD remix of the Passport saga below. Does this mean it’s a trilogy?
